Wrapping Up 2020 Turf Season, Looking Forward to 2021

Winter Play, Course Setup, Job Board

With the arrival of winter, golf activity has slowed a bit here at Eagle Brook but as certain as Chicago snow in May, you can safely bet the heartiest and most dedicated EBCC golf members will take advantage of every snow free day during the next few months to get out and play. As is our standard operating procedure during the winter months, play is limited to walking and the course is closed down to 9 holes. This year we've elected to close the front 9 and maintain playing conditions on the back 9, beginning a yearly rotation for winter play. Two sets of tee markers remain in place on active holes and two cups have been cut on each hole (10-18) allowing the pin location to be changed periodically thru the winter season.

We will be managing course conditions by regularly removing debris from putting surfaces and keeping geese (and their calling cards) at bay to the best of our ability. A goose control method that we're implementing at active gathering sites is to run a string of fishing line with reflective ribbon attached along the edge of ponds and waterways (Fig. 1). The string discourages goose traffic from water to land, and vice versa, and the movement and flash of the reflective ribbon is an added deterrent.

This is a proven method for goose control and we're already seeing some disruptions in behavior.

Other items on the winter job board include filling tee and fairway divots (Fig. 2), which will be completed before the end of December, and a continuation of the tree pruning that began last winter.

While there are a handful of trees marked for complete removal, the focus of our effort will be on the limbing up of trees on holes 12-16, the club entrance, and revisiting a few spots that were skipped last winter.

The EBCC grounds maintenance department and staff would like to thank all of our members and guests for their role in making the 2020 golf season productive and enjoyable. Happy holidays and cheers to a new year! I think we're all excited to see 2021.
